Great Hints for Studying German

By Linda Donaldson

There are many people out there who think that learning a new language is close to impossible. Thankfully, for the most part, learning a new language isn't more complicated than some basic memorization-especially when you are starting out. You just have to spend a tiny bit of time learning how the new vocabulary and grammar rules are used and then you will find learning a new language quite easy. The trick for people who want to learn German (or any other language) is to find a way of learning that works for them.

One of the best ways to learn a language like German is to find a friend or someone close to you who is a perfect German speaker. If you are lucky enough to find someone who speaks German as a first language, you know you'll be learning the language correctly. Learning from a fluent speaker who is a friend is also a good idea because he or she will be someone you will feel comfortable around so you won't be afraid of making mistakes or trying new things. Plus, when you learn German from a friend you will have more fun with it. A friend knows how you are and how you learn the best, and so they will teach you the right way.

View television shows and movies where they speak German. When you begin doing this you can have the movie's subtitles turned on. When you become more comfortable with the language, turn the subtitles off. You will discover that you understand more than you thought you would. Viewing movies and TV in German is an excellent method for learning the language as it is presently spoken. Classroom learning normally instructs people with the formalized version of the language an not the language as it is used in daily speaking (books can't do this because spoken language is always changing). Movies and television shows will assist you in learning present slang and various cultural things that you wouldn't be able to learn from a classroom environment or with an individual course.

Try to think in German. Whatever you think of in your natural language, try to repeat it in your mind with German. German will then become easier to think in. Being able to think in German is the best way to ensure that you can communicate effectively in it. If you are able to process the language the moment you are hearing it, it will be easier for you to decipher what is being said instead of having to use a translator or try to figure out what you just heard, and risk being incorrect.

There is a great deal of strategies for learning German. It can be challenging to determine which approach you should pick out for yourself. You might have to try out a few different methods before you find the method that works best for you. ?
