You have to understand one thing about the case. The case is not actually a protective case for the iPad because it is just a cover for the display. The back and the side of the iPad are totally unprotected and vulnerable to scratches and marks. The good feature of the smart cover or the case is that it is weightless and thin. It does not add anything to the weight of your iPad and you may feel like you have not added anything at all! The case fits the iPad perfectly and protects the new Apple iPad screen protector.

The first difference between the cases is the choice of colors they come in. The leather plastic are found in the colors like the black, navy, red, tan, and beige while the plastic one are found in the pink, blue, green, gray and lime. The plastic case looks "younger" and much more attractive than the leather case. The colors of the leather case are sort of bland and neutral. There is a big difference in terms of price though.

The plastic case is firm at the same time it has the smooth feeling with it. The leather case obviously smells of leather and feels softer than the plastic one. It looks professional compared with the leather one and it comes with the outer sticky texture. Since it is likely to wear off after sometime when you buy a cheap plastic case can be a better option. Both the cases are made of a material like "felt" on the sides and on the part protecting the new iPad screen protector.

The leather case is not slippery and is not prone to falling from the hands. The plastic case feels almost like rubber and is not slippery as well. Their function is the same and the only major difference is the outer surface. The front of the leather case is made of leather and the front of the plastic case is made of plastic. The leather case has the same color inside but the plastic case is grey in color on the side that protects the new iPad screen protector.

There is a warning on the Apple site about the leather case and it states, "Some of the colors may get rubbed off during use". This warning does not apply to the plastic cases. The plastic case resists against the scratches and if you want you can also clean it using water. The leather case does not survive well in terms of scratches and it can be marked on. There are few maintenance which are required when the leather case is of concern, while there is less need for the plastic cases. Even if you slightly drag your nail against the case, it will leave a mark that will not go away. If you accidentally spill water on the leather case, the color will wear off and several spots will appear on the surface.
