Nokia The Leader In Roving Communications Invention

By Barry Taylor

Telecommunications has been one of the inventions upon which the industrial revolution has thrived until today. The different phases of communication technology advancements are as old as the beginning of the nineteenth century. Nokia is synonymous with mobile communication. The first activities of this company as Telephony Company were in the 1960s. Currently the company operates two main subsidiaries and three business groups. The company has more than one hundred and thirty thousand employees dispersed in over one hundred and twenty outlets across the continents. Currently the firm holds the second position as the second largest mobile telephones and solutions provider after Samsung with a twenty three percent market share.

As far back as early 1960 the company had successfully provided military mobile radio communication equipment. Adding to this it also developed the first public mobile phone in Finland by 1971. Form then the focus has been on providing mobile telephone technology solutions and implementing associated infrastructure.

To reach where it is the company has undergone transformation that included some mergers. Significantly was the merger with Salora Oy. After this the firm ventured into global implementation of the now famous global system for mobile communications commonly denoted GSM. The resulting phones which were typically second generation was capable of transmitting and receiving voice and data.

After the global system for mobile communications came another important standard implementation. The international roaming standard was considered pertinent especially for global communication needs. As such the roaming standard enabled mobile phones to successfully communicate beyond country borders in effect establishing a world scale mobile phone network.

Eventually the first GSM network was implemented by the company in 1989. Following in 1992 was the first GSM phone. This featured voice calls roaming services and short messaging service popularly abbreviated as SMS. These have since become popular features with the present day mobile phone and come as a standard for many models.

Apart from mobile telephony equipment production the firm has also ventured in personal computer production although not as successful as the former. The main reason may be because the demand for mobile telephony in this century is on the increase.

The introduction of innovative mobile phone designs has contributed to the success of the organization. The 1100 series is perhaps the most successful. After its launch in 2003 the model has sold in excess of 200 million units world over. This success has increased the growing fortunes for the company.

The changing market requirements are causing Nokia to rethink. For a start the brought the 7710 series on market to appease the touch screen users who wanted the new feel and departure from the traditional keypad phones. Eventually the N and E series which had more enhancements were introduced into the market. The E series was particularly introduced by the company to compete against the blackberry model. The organization has also partnered with Microsoft to load the latest models with the windows mobile operating system. Additionally consideration has been towards having products that can adapt to requirements like social networking gaming and music entertainment.
