Finally Something for Free: iPhone Apps that Won't Cost You a Dime

By Herbert Hunke

Plenty of iPhone apps seek to entertain, organize or give us a boost of technology, but many of the good ones will cost you, if only a few dollars. When you consider that there are thousands of iPhone apps available, those few dollars can easily add up to eat a big portion of your bank account. The unspoken truth, however, is that many of these iPhone apps are completely free. Though they may not revolutionize your music library, they may tell you where you're going or help organize your clutter schedule. These useful apps come free for the taking.

Flashlight - Flashlights are always useful, and this iPhone app turns your phone into one. It sends off bright illuminating colors to make it easier going down a dark stairwell, rooting through your car for that laundry money, or just checking out a map in the dark. Keep a light on that's actually your cell phone. It's one of the free iPhone apps that are actually worth keeping around.

iBear Timer - This iPhone app keep track of the exact time that has elapsed after an important event, as well as the time that remains before a big event happens. Great for planning or just a conversation piece to know down to the minute how long it's been since you took your final exam. This is one of the iPhone apps that are useful as well as fun. Use it to keep track of meetings or just for knowing how long you've got until the weekend.

If Found Please - iPhones have a tendency to walk away. This one helps them come back. This simple but useful iPhone app displays customized information on your wallpaper, so you can set the phone to tell your whereabouts so that if you lose the phone, anybody who finds it knows where to send it. It works even if your phone is locked.

Lotto Shake - Want to play the Lotto but run out of number combination's? With this iPhone app, you just shake the phone for a random number combination. It works for the Daily Play, Thunderball, the UK Lotto and Euro Millions. If your iPhone number wins, there's no reason you have to share the winnings with your iPhone, but it might be nice if you took it out to dinner to show your thanks. iPhone apps need to feel appreciated.

Phantom Limb: The iPhone

By James Pynn

Back to the keyboard I wander. Sometimes I'll write about something that prompts me to revisit it and wonder: should I rehash this? Have I said everything I could about a particular topic? Can I say more? Am I being redundant? Sometimes the answer to all these questions is an emphatic yes. Sometimes, it's a definitive no. Today, I think I'd like to rehash a topic that still haunts me every time I pick up my blessed iPhone.

I'm not deaf, dumb (though that's debatable), or blind. Now, I realize there is a tremendous amount of animus directed towards we Mac-lovers -- and for good reason. I know it's annoying to have to put up with out smugness and our superior attitude. But don't blame us -- blame Steve Jobs. He made us into the snobs we are. After all, we were just following orders. In fact, I get new orders, via my Cupertino-designed beauty everyday. I swear -- Apple is talking to us...in our minds.

In the recent past, I've written about the iPhone and its 3G network and its awesome apps, but the feature I find myself using -- trailing behind the actual phone and the email access -- is the GPS driven map. I can't tell you how many times that tracking beacon has directed me to assorted Shangri-las across this fine nation of ours. Taco stands, burger joints, coffee shops -- I'd be utterly lost without this function. I know -- what a cliche. But like all good cliches, there is truth to it.

While I watch as each day my mind -- and my memory -- bleeds out into the ever-increasing, ever-expanding cloud, I can't help but wonder...what was I talking about? Oh, yes, my GPS tracking device -- I mean, my iPhone. Without it, I'm rudderless, a mere pawn in the chess game of the Gods. With it, I defy the Gods, I stand vigilant, ready to be directed to the nearest ATM or Hot Topic store. You can never have too many racing flame high-top Chuck Taylor sneakers, you know.

I am aware of the conspiratorial fact that the tinfoil hat set would have me believe the phone could be used against me -- as if I had some worthwhile scheme or master plan to dominate the world that was worth spying on. No, if the government wants to track me, I'd be flattered -- but I'm not picking up the tab if they show up at my local Starbucks. If they do show up, I can show them my six pages of solid apps and then maybe we could go for a walk and have dinner together. Again, I'm not paying.

iPod Touch Vs. iPhone: Pros and Cons

By Curtis Adams

Like the iPhone before it, the iPod Touch has come a long way without having to deal with many competitors. This is because until quite recently there wasn't much out there being offered by competing brands that even came close to tackling the capabilities of Apple's widely popular MP3 Player. Other companies like Microsoft and Sony have thrown in their touch screen players into the ring, but none of them have yet to outshine the iPod Touch.

The iPod App Store brings to light a significant factor in the iPod Touch's popularity. Because of the wide variety of software that consumers can buy, the Touch doesn't merely compete with MP3 Players like other iPods do. The Touch is actually being seen as competition for handheld gaming devices and PDAs as well.

The iPod Touch is marketed as a gaming device, and the music functionality is secondary. Much like the iPhone is a phone that "happens" to have a built in iPod, the Touch is a handheld gaming console that happens to have the same. Apple has pushed the Touch that way for several reasons. For one, it works. For another though, they don't want to distract you from buying the iPhone. So which one should you buy? The differences between the two devices are so minuscule that people already question buying the more expensive phone. It's not like the phone does a whole lot more anyway.

When there is a practical choice between an iPhone and iPod Touch, you need to consider the features above all else. The iPod Touch doesn't have a phone, it doesn't allow for connection to the internet from anywhere, and it doesn't have cool tools like Bluetooth and GPS. These are things you might not definitively need but, let's face it, they are things you are going to use should you have them.

An iPod Touch owner gets to save a lot of money. An iPhone costs about the same, depending on the model, but only when a long contract is signed. Without the contract, the Touch is $400 less expensive. Then to justify spending that extra money, iPhone owners must spend around $30 a month extra so as to get internet via their cellular provider. The overall cost of an iPhone, once an AT&T contract is done with, is in the thousands.

Ask yourself what you'd want the device for. If it's a phone, you already have one. The iPhone's phone isn't anything special, it just happens to be built in. If it's a camera you want, you likely have that on your current phone. If it's GPS functionality, maybe the iPhone is for you, though buying one of many other GPS enabled phones for a lot less money is also an option.

With all of that in mind it's clear why the iPod Touch is the better choice. While people who are in the market for such a device shouldn't be shy to start shopping around, they shouldn't be surprised if it's the Touch that ends up in their cart.

iPhone Apps for Tomorrow's Technology

By Owen Swartz

Looking for iPhone apps to blow the minds of the old folks? Grandma may think the Internet is only a tool to send puppy photos to loved ones, but these apps will make her think differently. Prove to the old folks we've reached the age of science fiction technology with the following iPhone apps.

Google Earth - Technology is supposed to deliver the world, and this one does, quite literally, or at least virtually. This iPhone app displays satellite imagery around the world in a 3d globe. It makes a great party trick to truly show the astounding capabilities of the iPhone. It's a free download, so you don't have to spend the earth to view the earth. Check out satellite images of your grandma's front porch and see how her geraniums are doing. Unlike a lot of other iPhone apps, this one is completely free.

SayWhere - While typing into the iPhone may become habitual after a while, punching in addresses to look up directions is always a pain, especially when you are already lost and frustrated enough. SayWhere was one of the first iPhone apps to translate user's speech into queries for Traffic, Google Maps, Yellow Pages or Yelp. It's a great app as it keeps the driver's eyes on the road rather than the phone.

SmackTalk - Feeling a peck guinea pig today? This iPhone app lets you talk like the animals. Though it won't find you directions or help with your finances, it will change your voice to sound like a puppy, kitten, Chihuahua or guinea pig. It repeats everything you say in a high pitched squeak or low frequency voice so you sound just like a cartoon. Why should iPhone apps always have to be serious?

James Oliver's 20 Minute Meals - It used to be the only time you used a phone to cook was to call Mom to ask about a recipe. This iPhone app goes a step farther by calling on world renowned cook Jim Oliver. He gives you full color photos, a video and step by step instructions to make great meals in 20 minutes. Create the perfect dream dinner for a date with your phone as the perfect cook book.
