Get Started With Your First Cell Phone

By Stuart Thompson

Cell phones have suddenly become much more than just phones. For instance, when you look at the newest batch of AT&Tcellphones, you will find the more expensive ones have an array of gadgets and functions that seem like they come right out of Star Trek. The cheapest phones often come with cameras built in now and when you buy the more expensive models you get a whole lot more.

Expensive mobile phones now can cost upwards of $400 and they come with all sorts of gadgets. The newest ones come with mp3 players, gps capabilities, tons of games, much bigger screens, and of course the Internet. The question is: do people really need all these things or are they paying for things they never use. Just because everyone else is getting the higher end phones, it seems there is more demand caused by peer pressure.

Adding to the confusion of what to get for a first time buyer is the question of what phones are available for what carriers. If you like a certain phone, can you get it with any carrier or is it made only for a specific one? Some phones are made by a manufacturer specifically for a certain carrier. In that case, you will have to use that carrier if you want their phone. Other phones though, are available for all carriers and all cell phone plans. It should be noted that in the case of phones made specifically for one carrier, people have found ways to unlock them and use them with other carriers.

After you make you cell phone choice, if it is a phone that can be used with all carriers, you will have to make a decision of what one to go with and then what plan to get. The differences between plans can be confusing and it seems the salesperson will always try to up sell you and get you to pay for more than you need. It is hard for a first time buyer to navigate all the options and figure out what they truly need and not pay more.

First time buyers of cell phones have a lot of decisions to make and sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming. There is a lot of competition between phone carriers and manufacturers for your dollar and they spend a lot in advertising to try to gain your loyalty. You must figure out what you want and need ahead of time so that you dont succumb to the pressure that will be put on you to get more than you need.
