Get a Free Mobile Phone

By Allan Holds

At a time when everything seems to be costing the earth, who would think that there would actually be a government cell phone plan where they would offer the phone for free. Uncle Sam has so many programs to complete that giving any stuff for free is unthinkable. Maybe the best he could do is to give some discounts or some budget items.

If at all someone convinced that the government is actually having a free cell phone plan, then you would certainly jump to the conclusion that this is being done at the taxpayers expense. Luckily for you, this is not true and such a government cell phone plan does exist in the form of SafeLink and a few others.

Free or discounted cell phones were offered in the United States government cell phone plan. This plan in its original format was created by Uncle Sam and was called the Lifeline Assistance program to help people in the lower income group by offering them subsidized phones. Now the program also offers free minutes which get carried over if one does not use them up within the month. TracFone cards can be used to buy more airtime if you use up all the time allotted to you.

The purpose of the free government cell phone plan is not something socialistic. It can be compared to other programs such as Medicaid and other social security benefits. It focuses on the underprivileged sections of society. SafeLink was actually started in the year 1984 under the administration of Reagan and was given the name Lifeline. It was started first to be used with landline phones. After cell phones became popularity, the focus switched to mobile service and now was given the name SafeLink. But one disadvantage about the revised plan is that if you have to qualify for the new version of the program, you have to prove that you live in a house that does not have a landline.

There are some doubts that people seem to have regarding the government cell phone plan. Many people are wondering if the government is using the taxpayers money to fund the program. This, however, is not true and the government backs the program but does not foot the bill for it. This is left to a private sector company.
