By Byron Higgins

TracFone, or TracFone Wireless, is a cell phone service provider which has prepaid plans and offers services in the US, US Virgin Islands and in Puerto Rico. It is rated in the A+ category by Better business Bureau. The company first started its operations in Miami, Florida in 1996 under the name Topp Telecom Inc. and later in 2000 it was changed to TracFone Wireless Inc.

TracFone offers its service only for its one-branded handsets. They provide locked phones that are pre-programmed by the manufacturer. Even its latest GSM models are locked and other GSM models are not adaptable to TracFone SIM cards even if they are unlocked. Features such as USB and Bluetooth are changed in the TracFone cell phones so that the user cannot transfer his files directly. You can download or upload photographs through MMS only and if you want any customized ringtones, you have to buy them only from TracFone.

For certain specific mobile phones such as Samsung, LG, Kyocera and Motorola, they offer airtime purchase. The kind of handset that you own will determine what type of network service they offer you. The airtime is calculated in units and these are purchased in blocks. The rate per unit depends on the number of blocks purchased. It costs 0.3 units for sending and receiving a single message whereas earlier it used to be 0.5 units. Web access will cost you 0.5 units per minute.

Earlier, TracFone used to charge 2.0 units per minute for roaming calls, that is calls made outside his home service area, now all the phones offer a plan known as the single rate one which comes to 1.0 unit per minute irrespective of the roaming location. Airtime has expiry dates and when you buy them again it adds 90 days of service. They also have a package of 365 days when you want to extend the plan.

Straight Talk is a new brand of TracFone which offers 30 day rate plans. Recently, TracFone has introduced its new service called the Senior Value Cellphone which is aimed to help senior citizens. TracFone provides its users an international calling facility. Users have to call toll-free number in the US and from here they can make calls to landlines in about fifty countries in the world.
