The Many Uses Of The iPad

By Eric Stafford

For regular people who have average interests in technologically advanced gadgets, the iPad is perceived to be just another expensive instrument from Apple. By average interests, we mean those who do not make it a point to research a newly launched product nor visit the manufacturer's website with passion.

Motivated by friend recommendations or family encouragement or some showoff at work, we decide to see what all the hype is about, so we go to the Apple website for more information. We aren't concerned with techie specifications. We don't care about processor speeds. We don't care about native support. What we do care about is: "What cool things can I do with the iPad?"

The iPad is like a cell phone on steroids or a laptop on a diet, depending on how you want to look at it. It is a mobile computer; mobile like our cell phone, but not as big and bulky as our laptop. It is what is called a "tablet". The screen is much smaller than a laptop screen and substantially larger than your cell phone. It is more along the lines of a netbook, only an inch or two larger.

It doesn't have a mouse, or a keyboard. You "click and drag" using your fingers. Just like you've probably seen the bartender do for quite a few years now. You simply use the multi-touch screen and click and drag items that way. Should you need to attach your iPad to a keyboard, it does offer that compatibility. You can also hold the screen in either "landscape" or portrait orientation. When you turn it, the screen is designed to rotate so you are always looking at it in the correct position.

The purpose of the iPad is to connect to the Internet, play games, watch videos or view photos. Additionally you can create business presentations or write papers and articles. Apps, or applications, are what really power the iPad. They allow you to do any number of fun, serious or important tasks. The best way to find out what apps are available is to go to Best iPad Apps 2012 because they list they best apps in every category and it is updated every hour!

Apple's iWork is a product similar to Microsoft Office. With the app, you can create presentations, documents and spreadsheets.

Basically, the default browser is Safari, which also happens to be created and designed by Apple engineers. As of late, Opera Mini has become available to iPad users as an alternative Web browser.

The iPad screen resolution is high enough to vividly display games, books, videos and photos and the speaker is sufficient but you can also buy stand-alone speakers.

To connect to the Internet, you can do so via a WiFi or 3G connection. To utilize a 3G connection, you must have a 3G service provider and a 3G SIM card from that provider. The iPad gives you the ability to switch back and forth as you choose to take advantage of the best connectivity for your given location. On average, 3G is faster than a WiFi connection.

App icons are used to organize the iPad display. The user can select his frequently used apps onto his Favorites section and these can be easily accessed.

The iPad is a cool device that has many uses. App developers are always coming up with useful and fun programs to entertain or enhance productivity. There is no telling where the technology will take us next.
