What to bring to a Festival?

By James Jacks

As we know festivals are a key part of our culture, and everyone seems to go to them at some period in their life. But most people go unprepared and don't know the necessities that are required when there. Or you get the people that plan everything in advance and end up bringing too much.

It's relatively simple. There are a few categories that are essential; communication, clothing, food and drink and accommodation. Communication is essential when going to and from the festival as well as when you are there. You need to keep in touch with the group you are with so you don't get lost in a crowd and get dragged somewhere so far away from your tent you end up sleeping next to the porter-loos. So you have a choice you can bring your pay monthly mobile from home and risk losing it or you can invest a small amount into pay as you go phones that serves you perfectly just for that festival weekend and for the next to come!

Clothing: Most people do over pack, they don't realise how much they need to take. Obviously it depends on if you are staying on site, and how long the festival lasts but there is a rough guide to how much you should take. For an average weekend festival you will need; 3 pairs of underwear, 2 t shirts, 2 pairs of trousers or shorts and a jumper for the night. Clothing does depend on the weather too; if it's going to rain, don't forget waterproof shoes, wellies and a rain coat.

Food and Drink: Obviously there is food and drink available at the festival; however the prices are considered daylight robbery. See how much food and drink you are allowed to bring first of all. You should bring a few bottles of water and maybe some snacks that can keep you going. If the festival is quite long and you are camping, you could bring a camping stove and then some little things that keep fresh that you can cook.

Accommodation: If you are staying then see what accommodation is allowed. Usually it is a tent; it is quite useful to go in a group so you can share tents. But get one big enough and take sleeping bags as well.

But most of all don't forget to bring your ticket.
