Over the last couple of decades there has been a huge surge in popularity for video games as they have got better and better since the early inceptions. Now you see all these powerful consoles like the PS3 and Xbox, which are now home entertainment systems with incredible graphics, and then there is the Wii with its motion sensor which could only have been dreamed of years ago. In the past though, especially 80s and 90s, the games were more based on how playable they were and not necessarily on graphics. The Mega Drive and SNES had massively playable but 2D games. And now we have smart phones like the iPhone the emphasis is back on playability because the graphics on there are similar to the old consoles.
Puzzle games have always been popular with the handheld gaming market but not on big consoles so the iPhone has seen a resurgence in this genre. There are all kinds of these available on iPhone, all with score leaderboards that encourage people to compete and beat their friends and indeed, people from all over the world. Games such as Cut The Rope and Trainyard have attracted millions of users, which has led to some very big revenues for the creators!
Platform games used to be the very biggest genre, with Mario and Sonic being the big rivalry in the 90s on the SNES and Mega Drive respectively. They have been reincarnated on the more modern consoles, but a lot of the original magic of the actual levels has been lost in these remakes. The iPhone has seen the return of addictive, frustrating platform games where you struggle to make the next level for hours on end. Sonic has made an appearance, and games such as Bounce On have introduced a whole new generation to the wonders of platform gaming.
There has been a large revival for arcade games, which are the classics like Pong, Pacman and Space Invaders from when games were in their infant days. These have been recreated on the iPhone and you can play them on the move, wherever you are!
The iPhone only special types of game all use augmented reality, which essentially uses the camera lens to show you the world in a completely different light on screen. One of these is a Star Wars game called Arcade Gunner which has fighters coming towards you that you have to shoot!
