How to Change an iPhone Battery

By Kim Kirmmse Toth

In addition to cracked screens and freezing hard drives, battery life is one of the top items within your mobile Apple handheld product like an iPhone, iPod, or iPad. While there are numerous settings on your phone that will increase battery life, once your battery is dead, it then becomes an expensive paperweight. If you are ready to take on the challenge of changing the battery yourself, then follow the steps outlined below.

Item you will need to take on replace your iPhone battery include a specially made screw driver called a Screw Driver Torx kit. Additionally you will need a replacement battery. Both of these are available at numerous online retailers. Now lets get started in the repair process.

The first step in removing an iPhone battery is to insert the pointy end of a safety pin into the tiny hole next to the headphone jack. This will eject the tray portion of the back plate. Next, remove the two screws on both sides of the dock end. You want to now separate the front display from the back panel by wedging the spudger between the glass front panel and chrome ring. Always be careful to not tear any ribbons that still connect both panels to each other. Then remove cables labeled "1" then "2" in that particular order with the spudger. The last ribbon cable can be released by flipping up the white tab holding it in place. This will allow the front and back cases to become completely separate. Next, remove the eight screws holding down the motherboard. Undo the ribbon labeled "4", then lift out the motherboard. A ribbon going to the camera will still attach it. Remove that particular ribbon from the camera to put the motherboard aside. Pry the camera out to allow the logic board to slide out. Make sure all screws securing the logic board are removed before doing so. Pull on the tab on the battery to remove it. Replace it with the new one and then put all of the parts back together in the opposite order you took them off in.
