CCG Games For Every Interest

By Michelle Howe

Card games these days go far beyond what can be played with a simple standard deck. While it will never go out of style to sit down to play poker or blackjack with a group of friends, more complex options are gaining popularity. If you are interested in learning more about what is out there, checking out CCG games is a great way to get started.

Also known as Collectible Card Games, CCGs are those that are played through assembly of a personalized deck that is chosen from a pool of specialized, themed cards. Pre-assembled decks are available to start off with, although many people prefer to put together their own from individual elements. Sometimes they combine the two options, beginning with a starter deck and customizing it bit by bit until they find it perfect.

A game may center around a theme that has been written specifically for it, without an outside source. The popular CCG Magic: The Gathering is probably the most prominent example of these. With this type, characters and story are original, rather than being adapted from another source.

Alternatively, some popular types are adapted from other types of media such as comics, video games, and television shows. Marvel superheroes, Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft online game, and the television and movie series Star Trek are all properties that have cards associated with them. With these, the pieces that end up in a deck will usually represent characters and situations that are well known and fit in with an existing creative property.

The rules of each different title will obviously vary, but there are often at least a few similarities. Play usually takes place in phases, during which moves are prepared and then executed according to which cards a player holds in his or her hand. They also usually share the need for a goal, whether that is some sort of milestone or something as simple as eliminating all opponents first.

This style of competition lends itself very well to tournament play, and many of them have formed in recent years. If playing with friends simply is not enough to satisfy your competitive urges, you can test your skill levels by taking one of these on. They usually range in size from smaller local tournaments to large, even international ones, particularly for more popular types.

If money or time is a concern, the online option offered by many of these games is quite attractive. Assembling a virtual deck can still get pricey, but it is usually easier to keep under control. Even better, the convenience of not having to physically seek out matches means that it is much easier to find a game whenever you like.

Gaming does not always have to be paired with collecting things, but when it is, many people find it irresistible. If you are one of those people, you have many options to get started researching CCG games today. Try a few out and see which ones you like the best, then have fun perfecting your deck!
