The clamping base has a cut-out that allows you to easily attach a car charger or micro-USB cable without interference. Overall, this package gives you 2 great options at a decent price. I only knocked off a star for the vent mount problems but it is a very well-made product that has excellent value. Drive safe everyone! Samsung Nexus S with a Platinum Series case from Best Buy Installation of the Vent mount went fairly smoothly. I wish it were a bit more flexible in how it attached to the vent, but it works. My charging cord works just fine while in this unit. Access to all phone functions is completely unobstructed. Overall it's a useful product if you have GPS software on your iPhone, and I'm very happy so far. I received the item on time and I liked the design and its ease of use. I like this product a lot. The only thing is it shakes a little too much and is at its last click for tightness on my droid incredible, but it still is a great design!
The Thunderbolt is a large, heavy phone with a side micro-USB charger port. I had some concerns with other universal car mounts because of the charger port location. I used the vent mount for most of the way, because it was too sunny to use the windshield mount. The windshield mount is the sturdiest piece of this product so I'm confident that if I need to use it will be alright. My disappointment with this product is that it only worked for me with the windscreen mount. The air vent mount, which is what I wanted to use, was much too flimsy and the weight of the phone (Galaxy S2) moves the product back and forth every time you turn the car (and I'm no speed demon!) On the windscreen it works well.
The phone will not move slide, or droop down. Over time, it is possible the foam will break down, or the suction mount mail fail, or the gripping gears may break down, but seems sturdy enough for the price paid.
It holds the phone nice and tight and the clips fit perfectly in my RAV4 vents. For me, this was a great purchase. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another if I needed it. So, I was pleasantly surprised.
The vent mount is the only relatively weak point in this product. The clips seem flimsy (but haven't broken yet) and the whole mount is hard to keep steady (I guess that's what you get for it being universal).
So that makes it useless for ANY of the purposes for which it is sold. I am close to giving up on any vent mount due to all the problems they have. The one thing that I have a problem with is the clips on the sides of the holding piece. When I use my iPod touch on it, they interfere with the volume buttons, but it doesn't take much tweaking to fix that.
