Common Habits Of Safe Drivers

By Madison Wright

Always paying attention to the road, limiting distractions, and using hands-free mobile phone systems are all common habits of safe drivers. Safe driving is something that everybody should strive for in order to limit accidents. A good driver not only limits distractions, but they also drive defensively, which means being aware of and accommodating to the mistakes of others on the road. In doing so, the roads will be much safer and accidents will be limited.

A driver must be fully aware of what's surrounding them at all times. This cannot be accomplished if he or she is paying attention to anything other than the road. For some, however, it's inevitable that there will be times when a phone call will be taken; in these instances it is critical that it is done so as safely as possible. Today, there are many hands-free devices on the market that are designed to allow drivers to keep both hands on the wheel and eyes focused on the roadway.

Manufacturers of hands-free devices understand that one size does not fit all. This is why consumers have the choice of Bluetooth headsets and speakers, windshield mounts, dashboard mounts, and more. In fact, many newer cars come standard with some type of pre-installed wireless device management system. It is likely that most drivers will be able to find something that fits their comfort zone.

Unfortunately, however, many people are still choosing not to use hands-free systems and are distracting themselves with the manipulation of mobile devices while at the wheel, which is creating a very dangerous situation on the road. Texting-while-driving, in fact, is a very serious problem that is said to be considerably more dangerous that simply talking on a cell phone while driving.

Fortunately, constantly improving speech recognition software is enabling very effective speech-to-text systems, which allow users to send and receive texts and/or emails without ever touching their phones. These amazing technologies are aimed towards keeping driver's attention on the road. The software is pre-installed on some newer phones, and is a downloadable application on others.

Defensive driving is also a very important part of being safe on the road. Defensive driving is the practice of actively scanning the street for hazards such as speeding vehicles, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and construction zones. Seeing these hazards ahead of time will give you plenty of time to avoid them before an accident occurs.

Furthermore, safe driving requires obedience to all traffic laws including signals and signs, as well as being courteous to others on the road. By doing these things, you'll be doing your part to improve the safety of our roadways. However, it's dangerous to assume that everyone is sharing your same safety concerns, so it's critical that you always stay aware.

You now understand some basics about the common habits of safe drivers that will help you to become one yourself. Good drivers do not allow themselves to get distracted and try their best to always maintain focus on the road. They also practice defensive driving by continuously scanning for hazards. They use one or more of the various hands-free devices for any conversations, including texting, which means they are limiting their chances of getting into an accident.
