Rises Above Expectations - Cup Holder Phone Mount Critique

By Kayla Sanchez

The vent mount worked perfectly in my Honda Odyssey. My iPhone fit perfectly.

I've contemplated switching to the window mount, but honestly, the vent mount suffices to stay out of my field of view and within reach if I need to adjust GPS without pulling the phone off the window. The cushions on the feet and arms are starting to show signs of continued compression, but I'm not particularly concerned yet.

My only drawback has nothing to do with the mount, but I wear gloves when I ride and my touch screen can't be changed with the gloves on. I originally was going to purchase this from another seller off of Amazon until I came across it on here. The mount will move if the phone is touched and the mount will fall off, bouncing its way down to the floor if you run over even a small bump in the road. Moves great and I have a lot of options as to where to place the mount.

For example, the supporting legs that the phone rest on can be adjusted or removed by sliding them, as well as moved to the track on the other end of the unit (essentially turning it upside down) which gave better clearance for the volume button on my phone. Additionally, I had to remove the supporting foot of the vent clamp (by squeezing it) and flip it around so it had a better stance on the edge of the vent.

I have since found that the microphone on the Evo is on the bottom of the phone, and the position of the feet can block the microphone opening. If you slide the feet to a certain position, you can open the microphone and the voice control works much better. I couldn't get this to work for my life. I needed a vent mount so that it was closer to me and easier to see.

I am ordering a 2nd one for my other car. It is cheap and works well connected to the vent. I've only been using this for a day but it seems very secure. I honestly feel that I won't have trouble with the mount dropping my phone, and the only thing I'm wondering about long-term is how well the suction cup holds using the sticky pad.

The mount had Pros in my book for all the important things, and had Cons for the less important things. I must say, I'm quite happy with this product. I originally bought a cheap car mount for my phone that broke within a few days, so I didn't have very high expectations for this product. Boy was I wrong. This worked well for several months, but when I went to move it to a different vehicle, the vent mount clips had stretched out and would no longer hold in the new vehicle or back in the old one. These are small parts that could easily be replaced, but there is no contact info for the seller. I use the suction cup I don't really see why I would use the vent one although now that I think of it on the driver side vent it might be a good idea. I also don't use the little stick on thing for the suction cup because I have a window and it sucks onto that SO WELL!

I tried every possible orientation of the phone, and none would allow access to all phone ports and power button. That said, the modification was not a big deal, and the holder works fine. The alternate mount (windshield) appears to be as good as our dedicated GPS (which is good) based on my examination of the materials and design, but as I said I haven't tried it yet. One could also do hands-free with it, though that is not advised.
