By Sebastien Witter

Skype has become synonymous with keeping in contact with family and friend via the internet. Famed for its free communication Skype installs on both a PC and a MacBook allow both operating system users to keep in contact with each other. The latest version of Skype 2.8 allows video chat, web chat and voice calling.

The first step you need to do to get Skype 2.8 is visit the website and download the very latest version compatible for the Mac osX operating system. The Skype homepage will direct you to the Windows version, however you will need to visit the Apple page by default. Once you have downloaded the latest Mac version click on its installer and proceed through the guide step by step.

The operation of the software is very similar to the Windows version. Skype 2.8 does have some minimum requirements for successful operation. You will need a minimum of 512mb to be able to run the video chat successfully, most Macbooks these days are at that level so do not worry. You will also need a microphone and a webcam unless your current Macbook is fitted with both.

When installing you can keep the logging settings at automatic, every time you switch on your Macbook it will load up as part of the start up routine. However if you will not be using Skype daily then it might be wise to set this to off. The settings can be found under the Applications-Skype tab in your Macbook. If you have an integrated iSight camera this can be used with your Macbook by clicking on the Photo Booth option in the Application Menu.

There are a wide range of international calling plans that will save you money over and above using a normal land line or cell phone. American and Canadian calling cards cost around 2.95 for unlimited calls. Other counntries cost between $5.95 and $12.95

Unlimited calling plans are ideal for the heavy users, however if the person you are calling has Skype as well then the callis always free.
