By Agustin Ohmernnal

It is a common occurrence - a cell phone gets wet and needs to be repaired. Water damage to a phone can be serious because it can short a circuit, or cause the phone's electronic components to erode. Ocean, pool, and household water are all very corrosive. Ocean water contains salt, which can cause instant damage. Chlorine and other chemicals found in the pool will destroy electronic components of a phone. Household water also contains chemicals that can damage components of the cell phone.

Though it is the first idea of many individuals when their cell phone gets wet, it is highly advocated by electronic specialists to not use a hair dryer on a cell phone that got wet. Though the thought is that the heat will dry the phone, in actuality, the heat will cause increased corrosion to already damaged parts. And to make matters worse, too much heat will cause a battery to explode or leak.

It is important to follow certain steps after a phone gets wet. First, it is imperative to not turn the phone on after it gets wet, it can cause the battery to short out and produce permanent damage. Furthermore, upon getting wet, take out the cell phone battery. Then place the wet phone into a bag that can be sealed so no more further damage will occur. Some electronic specialists recommend putting a few silica packs in the bag for moisture absorption.

After these items are removed, put the cell phone in a bag that can be closed. Electronic technicians advise individuals to put silica packets in the bag to absorb remaining moisture. If an individual does not have silica packets, they can use uncooked rice.

A refrigerator can actually be a beneficial tool in drying a phone. Though many individuals will question this tactic, it does work. Let the phone sit in the refrigerator for twenty five minutes. After the time is done, remove it for ten minutes and then repeat. This should be done a couple of hours a day for up to three days.

Individuals can take their phone to an electronics specialist. They will be able to inspect the phone, locate where the damage is and see if it is repairable. However, always compare the price of repairs to the price of getting a new phone - if the damage is extensive and repairs will be costly, it might be more beneficial to buy a new phone.

Do not panic if the phone gets wet, instead locate a solution. Many individuals do not think of ways to remove water properly and either does not do anything, and spend lots of money on a new phone that was not needed, or they do too much and break the cell phone completely.
