One of the more common complaints I have with the iPhone 3G cases I've been seeing lately is that they compromise the aesthetics of the phone. Of the things that I like most about the iPhone 3G in contrast to its predecessor is that it feels better in the hand - thinner, sleeker. Many iPhone 3G cases add bulk to the phone, robbing users of the aesthetic pleasure of the phone and making it harder to slip in and out of pockets.
That's the key problem with iLuv's Clear Hard Case for iPhone 3G. While it protects the phone well, it's too bulky and it also lets the phone get pretty dirty. The basic features and functions of the Clear Hard Case for iPhone 3G are obvious: made from two clear pieces of plastic, the case snaps together around the phone, leaving openings for the headphone jack, dock connector, on/off button, volume control, ring silencer, and camera.
Most iPhone cases don't protect the screen in any way, primarily because it's difficult to protect a touchscreen from scratches while also keeping it responsive to touch. ILuv solves this problem in a smart way: it includes a thin overlay screen protector in the package, a move that I'd like to see all case makers imitate. The protection provided by the case is good, but adds bulk in exchange. And this is one problem. One of the things I most enjoy about the iPhone 3G is that it slips so easily into and out of my pockets, that it feels light and slim. Not so with this case on it, which diminishes my enjoyment.
And the case, with its open face to allow access to the screen and ports also allows a lot of dust and lint inside. This might not be a problem on another case, but because this one is clear, you can see every speck, making the face of phone look messy and a little gross. Most iPhone 3G cases do basically the same things these days and because of that, I'm getting more and more interested in the intangible experience they provide: how do they make the phone feel? Do I enjoy the phone more or less when using them?
Due to the bulk and dirtiness inherent in the iLuve Clear Hard Case for iPhone 3G, I enjoy my phone less when using the case. And that's an argument against the case in my book.
