The Problem for Android Developers

By Greg Kelly

Standardization. When we hear about Android taking market share from Apple we need to think about the number of devices that run the Android platform. There are many different devices from different suppliers running Android whereas with iOS there's just the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3Gs and the iPhone 4.

This for me makes the comparisons of the operating systems unfair. My main concern is the quality of applications developed for Android phones vs iOS apps. While the applications on android phones have been improving rapidly, the general experience of finding and using quality applications on Android devices is far behind the experience on iOS devices. The different devices that run Android is the main cause of the issues.

The first issues that come up are physical issues. The most obvious one being the screen size It is hard for the developer to standardize their applications with the different screen sizes on different devices. Examples of the variation of screen sizes can be seen between the galaxy S2 and Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini.

The screen size is not the only physical issue that developers face. There are other differences such as the type of screen, the text input type, the memory available and the computing power of the device. These are not the only problems that Android developers face. There are also differences in the software. Different providers use different skins on their Android devices. Samsung and HTC do this to most of their phones that use the Android platform. There is also the issue of updates. Some provides do not update past a point, some phones are still running Android 2.2.

It is these differences that lead me to believe that the applications on the iOS devices will continue to be more usable and generally a better experience than the ones on the Android devices. As the number of different Android devices continues to increase, the more the experience of the application available decreases. There are some amazing Android Smartphones out there at the moment. The Galaxy S2 is a genuinely great phone however I get the feeling that when more Android devices are released.
