IPhone Skins - An Art Form Of Its Own

By Clifford James

Some people get almost as excited about their iPhone skins (customizable protective covers) than they do the actual device. If the creative output from hundreds of artists is not sufficient for the user to express their uniqueness via their mobile phone cover, some suppliers let the customer create their own using either photographs or original artwork.

Protective covers have rapidly evolved into an art form in their own right and their designs have become as collectible as, well, art. The late Norman Rockwell (1894 - 1978) is an inadvertent contributor to the genre. No fewer than six of his creations now feature on skins. Rockwell was a popular 20th Century American artist and illustrator, famous for his depictions of everyday life scenarios.

'Sunset in Venice' and 'Artist's Garden at Giverny' are examples of the work of Claude Monet (1840 - 1926), founder of French impressionist painting. Mathematician and artist MC Escher (1898 - 1972), the graphic artist from The Netherlands, contributes several designs posthumously.

Vincent Van Gogh (1853 - 1890), Expressionist trailblazer and Dutch post-impressionist, contributes 'Cafe at Night' and 'Starry Night'. His work is displayed alongside that of Sandro Botticelli (1445 - 1550), Italian Renaissance painter from the Florentine School. His place in 21st Century culture is assured with 'The Birth of Venus'.

Phone covers as an art form is certainly not limited to artists from the past. Modern painters are certainly not neglected here. Michael Page (b. 1979), an artist from San Francisco, California who taught himself everything he knows, has had his 'Peace We Bring. And 'Enki's Gold' immortalized in colorful polymer cases. The luridly colorful, high resolution fractal distortions, 'Cauldron 1' and 'Change is Life' are the work of Austin, Texas, software developer and artist Paul McGuire.

This is but a small selection of artists from the fifteenth century to present day whose creative output is displayed on this funky new genre. There is not only an iPhone skin for every iPhone user, they are sufficiently affordable to allow users a skin for their every mood.
