Is Bluetooth Secure?

By Troy Jones

All kinds of means of communication today are faced with privacy and identity theft issues. Most people know that security is needed for email services and networks. What users of Bluetooth need to realize is that Bluetooth also requires security measures as well.

The good news for Bluetooth users is that the security scares, like most scares, are normally over dramatized and blown entirely out of proportion. The truth being told, these issues are easy to manage, with various measures already in place to provide security for Bluetooth technology.

But it is true that there were incidences when Bluetooth phones were hacked into. You should know that a device can be hacked into if it has no security measures at all.

As Bluetooth specialists say, a hacker can only hack a Bluetooth device if he forces two paired devices to break connection, steal the packets that were used to send the pin, and decode the pin.

Of course, the hacker must also be within range of the device, and using very expensive developer type equipment. Most specialists recommend that you have a longer pin, with 8 digits being recommended.

Security basics The most basic level of security is of course the pairing process. Devices will pair when they recognize each other and share the same pin.

An encryption algorithm is used for Bluetooth, and it is very safe and secure. Paired devices will be secure also.

Unpaired devices will not communicate with each other. Due to this pairing process and the fact that it is short range - Bluetooth technology is considered to be secure.

But experienced hackers found ways to get through this kind of security. There is a solution to this; a software can be used to prevent the hackers from doing their tricks.

Security will always be a concern of the people given the popularity of Bluetooth. As Bluetooth gets bigger and better, security will always be something that no one really takes lightly.

Bluetooth is sure to give you bigger and better security with the new devices. People, especially the manufacturers, realize how important security really is.
