Helpful Tips If You Want to Learn Japanese

By Andy Lewis

It's great that you've decided to study Japanese! Learning a new language can be fun and exciting. With another language, you will be able to communicate with more people in more places. Of course, some languages are harder to learn than others. Many people who are learning a second language for the first time pick one that has the same alphabet as their own, as well as a similar grammar. With Japanese, you will have to start learning a whole new set of rules for everything, from the way you write and read to the way you form words when you speak! With these suggestions you will be able to make a good start in your Japanese studies.

First of all, you can learn a lot by simply watching Anime! By doing this, you can relax and have fun while your mind picks up some Japanese. You should be able to find Anime, which are fast-paced animated Japanese movies and shows. This form of entertainment is now available all over the English-speaking world, either dubbed or in Japanese with subtitles in English. If you want to find Anime, you can either visit the nearest video rental store or do a web search and you'll find a wide selection. Simply turn on the option that lets you listen to the show in the original Japanese and read along. You will find that this is a great method to learn words and how they are put together into sentences. This is probably the most enjoyable method of learning a new language! You may have your own favorite Anime shows, but if you want some recommendations to start with, try TriGun, Fullmetal Alchemist or Cowboy Bebop.

You should also look for Manga books. These books known as Manga are Japanese graphic novels; many have been translated into English and other languages. Reading Manga can be a very good way to start developing reading comprehension skills in Japanese. You'll be able to practice character and sentence identification as well as learn how to read fluently in the Japanese style (from the back of the book to the front, from the right to the left on the page). You can pick up some useful knowledge of popular word usage and slang by reading the books in your native language. You can learn some things by taking classes and formal lessons, but it's also good to become immersed in everyday culture. Keep in mind when you look for Manga that these are often quite explicit!

You will also learn faster if you work with flash cards. When learning a language like Japanese, you'll definitely want to put together a few sets of flash cards. One flash card set can help you remember vocabulary and basic grammar. Flash cards can also be used for learning how to form the different characters so you can start to read them.Use Japanese on one side and then spell out the answers phonetically on the other side of the cards. If you do use more than one set of flash cards, keep them separate to avoid confusion!

It is a wonderful idea to start learning Japanese. Remember, it will be tough to start learning Japanese, but think of how great it will be once you actually know it! Think of the cultural opportunities it would open for you! If you enjoy Anime, you could watch it and not even need subtitles! That is something you could be proud of. Of course, if you ever want to visit Japan, knowing the language would be a great advantage to have. Once you know Japanese, learning other Asian languages would become much easier. Becoming multilingual is something that can make your life richer and more fun!
