Is Smartphone Your Choice?

By Alex Speirs

For those of you as yet unfamiliar with Smartphones, by definition, it is a mobile phone offering advanced capabilities; it has PC-like functionalities. That said, the first actual mobile phone that was considered a smartphone was introduced to the market way back in 1992 by IBM and was affectionately called Simon. Back to the present and we are more likely to link the term Smartphone with Blackberry or Apple. So what makes Smartphones better?

Think advanced technology, feature-rich, sophisticated capabilities and functionality and these are all terms which you may see alongside any description of a Smartphone. But a mobile phone is still a mobile phone right? Well, sure the Smartphone lets the user make and receive calls, send SMS but it also adds in features that you would find on an up-to-date computer, so the user can send and receive emails and view or even edit Office documents like on a PDA and that has to be better!

Key to the Smartphone's increasing popularity and usage are its many features, not least of which are its applications or Apps as they are generally called. Popular apps include the ability to download digital music, games, business software, edit photos, or even get directions to locations via GPS. Gaming apps are very popular indeed, perhaps the most used by some. Smartphones can access the internet often at higher speeds so it's easy to browse your favorite sites whilst out and about.

Smartphones are certainly faster thanks to the high speed 3G networks that support them too and their battery life is extremely good in most cases. It's a highly personal and versatile device and well-priced for the general market. It is predicted that by the end of 2011, 1 in 2 Americans will have a Smartphone.

So Smartphones are better and getting better with every version and businesses need to switch on to Smartphone users when considering their mobile marketing strategies. Universal McCann research shows that more than one-third of high-use smartphone users respond to mobile ads for example. That is a lot of untapped potential.
