The Windows Phone 7 And The Apple IPhone

By Melissa Gardens

There have been many phones out there trying to compete with the iPhone models. So far, up until this point, no phone has been able to. That may change with the debut of Windows new phone, Windows Phone 7. They have really redesigned their phone and operating system from scratch. This new product is really on the same level as the iPhone.

As popular as the Apple iPhone is, there are many disadvantages of the product that some have overlooked. While the Windows Mobile phone is available to almost all carriers, Apple iPhone is locked solely to ATT Wireless. Windows 7 Phone will be available to both GSM and CDMA carriers while the iPhone is just starting to consider partnering with CDMA. A physical keyboard may be the feature that is a deal breaker for most people and the Windows Phone has that.

At first glance the home screens of both phones look very similar. The black background and brightly colored and highlighted icons on the home screen. Windows 7 Phone has bigger icons and fits less on a screen. The folders on the screen of the WP7 are called Hubs. With those Hubs, Windows is able to multi task and keep programs running in the background. The iPhone does not allow that. Once you shut a program down, it is shut down. It does not run in the background.

WP7 is currently going to be marketed towards the younger demographic. The hip demographic that text messages, instant messages and uses social networking sites more than they should. Apple, however, markets to everyone that can use their products. Their commercials are creatively generic and catchy, they appeal to a wide variety of people. WP7 has incredible integration with social networking. Their revolutionary Motoblur will streamline all of the social networks into one place.

WP7 is integrated with Microsoft's popular ZuneHD music player. This is compared to iTunes as the iPhones basic platform for music play. The phone is also classified as a gaming phone because it is integrated with XBox Live. Many different games are going to be coming as a mobile version as well to play. EA Games is one of those manufacturers that will be taking advantage of this great new technology. While the iPhone can run many different games that you would download, it is not considered a gaming phone as the WP7 is.

When you have an iPhone and lose it, you have to have a MobileMe subscription to try to stop the thief or potential thief at all. MobileMe is a hefty subscription to their service yearly while WP7 has it free of charge. With Find My Phone, your phone will ring, lock itself and track your phone with it's sophisticated GPS service. It does all of this remotely. This is something that Apple lacks.

When the phone launches by the end of 2010, one will see which phone will come up on top. The design of both phones are very similar as is the functionality. The only difference is the features and demographic that the phone is marketed to. WP7 really does seem like it could be a solid competitor for the iPhone.
