Cell Phones- The Evolution

By Byron Reynolds

You love your phone, because you practically use it everyday- for your emails, social networking, photography, browsing, texting etc. But that wasnt always the case. Just over a decade ago, phones were a big deal and owning one would turn many heads. But things have changed. Having a phone is the norm and you are considered unlucky if you dont own one.

In truth, things have changed from the late 90s when mobile phone manufacturers were only coming up. Monochrome displays back then were cool enough to suffice, but right now, its hard to even stand them. What you get these days is a Retina display, or a super-AMOLED with crisp display with vibrant colors and clear contrasts. For the sizes, things have changed from the two-line size of the yester-decade to the 2.4 in your typical Blackberry. Touchscreen phones extend this even further, to up to 4.3 as with the EVO 4G from HTC.

The ergonomics have also changed over time, but not dramatically. Bar-shape is what started the race, and even now, it is still in it. Of course some have come and gone, and right now we have sliders, dual sliders, flip and swivel. Others like the Backflip for Motorola do not have words to adequately describe them. A new development that is not too old is with touchscreen phones. Most people consider a touchscreen a necessity when it comes to a phone, simply because its flashy. Capacitive and resistive screens are a representation of what the future has to offer. But hardware keypads and keyboards are still a thing of the present and wont go anywhere for a long time to come.

A cell-phones specifications are what make it sell. The longer the list, the more desired its going to be. Features such as Bluetooth, WI-FI, GPS, an operating system, a camera are a normal thing. The network of choice is no longer 2G, but 3G, 3.5G and even 4G. As you go deeper, the desired features increase, like accelerometer and proximity sensors, secondary cameras and a media player are added to the list, which grows longer still.

A lot of debate is ensuing about the future of devices such as media players, cameras, camcorders and navigation systems because cell phones have entered their territories. But the future is unpredictable, and this might just be true.

When it comes to the prices of phones, not much has changed, except the fact that they are now more affordable. However the figure ascends when you demand for the latest features. While $50 can get you something to call and text, $700 can get you an iPhone 3GS, and a million dollars can get you a Gresso Luxor made of pure gold and encrusted in diamonds. And no, even in our wildest fantasies we wouldnt own such a phone, its just ridiculously expensive. But thats how far evolution has got us.
