Should Senior Citizens Make the Cell Phone Switch?

By Matt Jones

With Cell Phones falling in price and size, more and more people are owning these devices. Seniors citizens are a group that should be jumping onto this bandwagon for various factors which we will list.

There are so many different uses for a cell phone today. Just about everyone needs one for:

* Conducting their business

* Staying in touch with family and their friends

* Feeling safe and secure

Cell phones have become so dependable and so reliable both in call connection and hardware that it isn't a bad idea for seniors to drop their hard line and go for a cell phone as their main home phone.

Cell Phone Portability

Even if it is a senior that is one that stays home the majority of the time and is unlikely to ever venture out on their own a cell phone still makes more sense than a landline. The landline is something that is attached to a specific location and even if it is a cordless it is still bulky to carry around. So the senior would have to travel to wherever the phone is or carry the bulky cordless around the house with them. When it comes to convenience and if a quick call has to be made there is no substitute for a cell phone.

Economical Choice

Many do not make the switch from a land line to a cell phone as their main phone as they have come to assume that a cell phone costs more to operate. This is no longer the situation.

When it comes down to it there is really only a couple or small number of numbers that the senior calls to where they'd talk to someone for any extended period of time. When it comes to this there are many cell phone providers out there that have plan offerings to fit this need. Providers offer discounts and/or special offers on calling costs if both of the numbers are on the same network. There are others that will allow free calls to your most frequently called numbers. There are also providers out there with plans and prepaid plans that will offer you unlimited incoming and outgoing for a reasonable price per month.

If you don't have a long distance plan at all, a cell phone can often pay for itself within a month or so. One also has the added security that you has a phone on oneself at all times in case of an emergency. Many cell phones have GPS and also have an emergency 'panic' button on the back of the phone. These phones are therefore serving two valuable purposes as they allow the senior cell phone users to stay in touch with friends and also assist with emergency alert.

A New Toy for the Old Boy

Although many seniors do not want to be learning about new technology as in one's golden years there are better things to do with their time. However, many seniors do enjoy the challenge and the stimulation of a new gadget and some useful features. Many cell phones are designed specifically for seniors and feature large buttons and less 'bells and whistles'.

If they don't like technology don't let this dissuade you as there are cell phone options out there that are just as easy, if not easier, than a lot of the land line handsets that are out there.
