Free Cell Phone for Senior Citizens from the United States Government

By Lorna Hollaway

Being able to get a free cell phone from the government is an amazing service. This is a great program for not just those on disabilities but also for the senior citizens and other low income individuals. This isn't a home phone replacement, however, it's an amazing tool for the elderly parent or grandparent if they're out walking or get into trouble while they're driving. It can be a lifesaving tool. This play isn't going to give an amazing amount of units a month; however, it's something that's completely free, not just the phone but also the minutes. If you're on state assistance like that of Medicaid, Medicare, free or assisted housing, food stamps, sometimes social security and so forth. If you're not on one of these programs it doesn't immediately disqualify you but regardless of low income or other you'll need to go through an easy verification process.

First check out the local and state assistance website and you can get information for the program Lifelink. Just follow the simple instructions to apply. This is one of the companies that is used the most to give an outlet to the senior citizen as well as other individuals.

SafeLink Wireless is the other outlet and it adjudicates the free cell phone programs. The SafeLink program isn't available in every state right now but the number is growing. All you have to do is simply visit the SafeLink website and put in your zip code in order to find out if it's in your area. If it is you can find out if you qualify through going through the qualification process and you'll get both your phone and your minutes directly from the SafeLink program.

Once you've applied for the phone you can look back to the website and check on your approval status. If you have to go through the income verification it can take a little longer but not much usually. After you've qualified they'll mail you your phone. Usually it comes in a few days but can take up to a couple of weeks and you can have the phone up and active by the beginning of the next month.

You'll have to qualify again yearly, done in the same manner that you did so initially. Even though we're focusing on an outlet for a senior citizen you can apply if you qualify on any of the programs and more we listed above and you could qualify based upon employment status. SafeLink isn't an exclusionary to seniors. It's a free application process and everything else is free as well so you owe it to yourself and the senior citizen in your life to make sure the application is gone through and a potentially lifesaving cell phone is received.
