The Best Cydia Apps

By Cortne Winegard

I've been rocking a jailbroken iPhone for a few months now, and I must say I absolutely love it. It feels just like when I switched to Linux: power to the community, freedom of choice and usage, open source spirit... and you're pretty much on your own if shit hits the fan.

A month ago, and then again 2 weeks ago, I blogged about the best Cydia applications. I kind of feel like it's time for another update, since new apps come out so frequently, and I'm using an almost entirely new set of apps now as opposed to when I first started. Plus, it helps to have these reviews out there, since apps can be more difficult to locate in Cyia as compared to the Apple Store.

Love it or hate it, one thing the regular Apple store does well is to organize it's apps and allow users to rate them. Cydia just hasn't caught up yet. They get tons of new applications added on a daily basis. However, they're organized for users to easily find new stuff, but not necessarily to help you find GOOD stuff. There are a few repositories on the web that try to do this for you (such as appClone) but even they aren't as good as they should be yet.

So, what you'll find below are my current 10 favorite apps from Cydia that can be used on any jailbroken iPhone.

1)WinterBoard: Let's you customize anything that you can imagine on your phone. Customize skins, themes, buttons, backgrounds, sounds, you name it. Install adult skins. Whatever. You can also download plugins for this app from Cydia that let you customize even more than the default install will allow, like the Keyboard and SMS.

2)SBSSettings: More options for configurations. Except unlike #1, this adds the options right to the native configuration menu. Lets you hide icons, use Facetime over 3G, and more. Tons of plugins just like for Winterboard. I use it to hide the iTunes and Youtube icons.

3 - StatusNotifier - Ever noticed how difficult it can be to check whether you have a new text message or email? This adds easier to read notifiers.

FontSwap: This app provides an easy way to swap system fonts. Just select your font from the list provided by the font swap starter pack and select to respring and you will have new fonts! There's also a bunch of add-on fonts available, and new ones pop up everyday.

5)iTypeFastR: Does what it says. Lets you type faster. Let's face it, when you're texting, you want to type as quickly as possible. The default keyboard is simply too small. This app adds a special keyboard in landscape orientation. It has larger keys so that you're less prone to fat-fingering. One especially cool feature is that it makes letters that are used more frequently (like E and R) larger.
