Pros and Cons Of Jailbreaking Your Iphone

By Don Serrels

When you jailbreak your Iphone using jailbreak software, you are basically untethering it from it's umbilical cord to Apple, i.e. freeing it from their control.

Because the iPhone is far from flawless as Apple created it, thousands of iPhone users have flocked to Jailbreak in search of iPhone changes and improvements. iPhone has been held back by limited customizability, text message privacy issues, and a lack of multitasking capabilities. But Jailbreak can solve all of these problems with apps and fixes available in Cydia and Installer.

Cydia and Installer are the unofficial "App Stores" of the Jailbreak world. Developers create apps and tweaks and different utilities and upload them to these package managers, which organize everything into categories. The differences between Cydia and the App Store are the lack of an app approval process, and the lack of access limits on the iPhone software - i.e. you can do things Apple did not design the iPhone software to do.

Why SHOULD You Break Your Iphone?

No restrictions. Want a custom wallpaper on your home screen? Custom icons for your apps? Internet tethering? A category system for organizing your apps? The ability to hide native iPhone apps you don't use? You can do all of this and more with Jailbreak, as iSmashPhone describes in ten reasons to Jailbreak your iPhone. As one of my readers recently noted, Jailbreak can make all your iPhone wishes come true.

Another reason to jailbreak is to join the club! Tons of cool people are jailbreaking their phones, and it's a bit cliquey online in some of the forums. It's a bit of a revolutionary movement, and you might enjoy checking it out.l

To use your phone on alternate carriers. In the United States, Apple locks you into a contract with Apple when you buy an iPhone. When you jailbreak, and then unlock, you can use your phone on whatever carrier you choose.

Why You Might Not Want to Jailbreak your IPhone

First of all, there have been some viruses spreading through jailbroken phones. In general, the risk is no worse than with regular iPhones that haven't been cracked. However, there are some significant security vulnerabilities in some of the phones that open you up to having your date stolen. Something to think about.

Warranty status. When you jailbreak, you violate the user agreement that you signed when you bought your phone. Thus, you have no warranty if Apple finds out that your phone is jailbroken. So, if you drop your phone, if your dog pees on it, or if it gets bricked - sorry you'll be on your own.
