I remedied this by adjusting the joint so that the phone is already as far down as it can go and aimed at me. Doing that limits the places I can aim the phone, but I don't typically adjust it while driving so it's not that big of a deal.
But I did not like that it blocked part of the vent and also was not completely stable. I use the windshield and the dash mounts now on both cars. Works great. It holds my HTC Evo 4g one of the biggest phones out there and it fits it great.
I prefer the vent mount as the Droid X has an issue with heat. This keeps the phone out of the window and allows the AC to blow across it when on.
I also got her a GPS program for her iPhone too. I ended up using the suction cup on the windshield. I was extremely surprised at the quality of this product when it arrived today. It is made out of quality material and all the accessories are well made. I won't have to buy a new holder for next/new phone. Cons: The adjustable arms are released with a push button/stick that is spring loaded.
Others still had weak suction cups that would fall off during the summer when the sun and heat softened the silicone of the suction device. This mount is made VERY WELL! I used the vent mount for most of the way, because it was too sunny to use the windshield mount. The windshield mount is the sturdiest piece of this product so I'm confident that if I need to use it will be alright. The whole mount ended up falling off when I was driving. Since then, I have been using the dashboard/windshield suction mount and everything's fine.
The vent mount fits better in the 1989 but does just fine in the 2006 model. It fits my Evo snugly with the adjustable spring loaded arms when positioned horizontally or vertically.

This product is perfect. I'm currently using the air vent holder and find that there are no distractions at all. I tested out the vent mount and it seems to hold nicely, but I'm not a fan of having it that low in my vehicle. Overall, it's a great product to have especially for those using their phones as GPS units. I highly recommend this mount for anyone looking for a phone holder in their car. It is durable, and made of thick sturdy plastic.
