What Exactly SIM Only Plans Encompass And How You Can Save With Them

By Tara Parker

SIM Only Plans can designate a couple of options. One is the prepaid, or pay-as-you-go type plan. Others require a contract just as regular mobile phone services. However, with this option, you don't get a new phone, but just the card. You use your own phone.

There are a number of reasons a person might choose to go with the type of plan that requires a contract, but offers no handset. One is usually lower cost. However, check closely, because these plans are not always lower in cost. Other reasons include the fact one can use their own handset, in case they have one they especially want to use. Also, they are free to choose a new handset to their own choosing, in case they don't like the free or reduced cost one.

Plans without a contract attached are sometimes best, or may be all you can afford. For example, if a person has poor or no credit, they may not can get a contract without a huge deposit. In that case, pay-as-you-go is the best option. Also, if you just need the phone service for a short period of time, such as when travelling out of the country, you can use this option to avoid high roaming charges. You can put the new card into your old phone just for the amount of time when you need it.

These options have a number of different options depending on the agreement. Some are fully serviced, just as any other plan, which may include texting, talking, data/internet access, and roll-over minutes. Other have less features. Most do not have roll-over minutes, as you pay only for what you use. You can get options to pay for only the amount of usage, or for unlimited usage if that is the option you choose.

You might wonder why use a prepaid or SIM only if you have good credit. There is always the possibility that things will change for you in the future so you don't want to get stuck in a contract situation. Too, you can't always anticipate the exact cost of the monthly contract, due to overages and such. If you have prepaid, you know exactly how much you will pay. You will not have extra charges at the end of the month like you can with a contract.

For travelling, the prepaid option is best for a number of reasons. You don't have to worry about losing your phone or leaving it somewhere when travelling away from home. They can stay in contact with family or business associates without having to worry about leaving the phone in their hotel room or somewhere. Also, there is the ability to only have to deal with family or work, or whomever you choose to give the new number to, without having to worry about others calling that have you regular number.

With a plan such as this, you can control how much either you or your family uses. It is a means of control where there is a possibility of no self-control. It is ideal for a college student who needs to be able to call home, but may not handle the amount of usage. The amount of usage is automatically controlled by the amount of usage paid for.

The different options offered with the SIM Only Plans means everyone can have what they want. If these features are something you could use you should look into it further. Make sure you are aware of features and what each costs, so you can compare. Choose the plan and options that give you the service you need while keeping costs to a minimum.
