Are More People Buying Smartphones Than Regular Mobiles?

By Alex Speirs

The mobile phone - just about everyone has one - well to be a little more precise, 250 million people in the US have one - a standard mobile at least, that is. Today however, all of the mobile phone hype surrounds smartphones, so it begs the question: are more people buying smartphones than regular mobiles?

The fact is that the majority of Americans currently own and purchase more regular "feature" phones than they do smartphones. However, Nielsen research says all that will change in 2011 and by the end of this year in fact, the market share of sales may be around 50/50. That could be down to the fact that there are so many different types of smartphone on the market compared with the previous year. A lower price could also be a contributing factor and the more inexpensive that smartphones become, the more people will buy them.

Smartphones really are set apart by their capabilities, not least of which is the way they can sync with the user's email account. They make great little gaming devices. It's a camera that in some models can edit your photos. Their used for business and their used for fun and are incredibly versatile.

So whilst 60% of those mobile phone consumers may still be choosing regular phones at the moment, the future of smartphones looks very bright indeed. Just consider how far the iPhone has come in the last 5 years and where it is heading in the next 5! Smartphone technology is developing at a phenomenal rate. Given that smartphones are behaving more and more like laptops, then it is feasible to predict that smartphone sales will continue to rise dramatically, as more people turn on to what they can do.

The rapid growth of smartphone ownership is certainly helping to boost mobile marketing, say experts, with these devices lending themselves very nicely to marketing materials because the graphics and data speeds, apps, etc are so favorable. They are perfect for targeted mobile marketing campaigns, so businesses need to take note of this trend.
