Who Will Be The King - Apple Or Android?

By Alex Speirs

Apple iPhones versus Android mobiles is a hotly debated topic amongst smartphone users, mobile device reporters and critics, alike. One could almost be forgiven for forgetting that there are three other major players in this smartphone race too, like the highly successful Blackberry for example! However, it is probably because Apple and Android are so very different that the comparisons are made. As the battle rages on, is there room for Apple and Android?

Apple iPhones have really only been on the market for 4 years and they have already produced four generations of the iPhone with remarkable development in each progressive model. It is now very much a success in many countries and sales have been incredible with a total of 73.5 million iPhones sold by the end of 2010. By comparison, Google's Android is much newer to the market but is already dominating sales according to some reports. Some even say it outsold Apple in the last quarter of 2010.

Apple has a fantastic range of Apps amounting to over 300,000, whilst Android trail with 200,000+. However, with Android's open system for developers, Android may soon catch up. Openness is the key to Android, with its multiple carriers and open handset alliance, it is this very trait that sets it apart and is the very essence of the difference between Android and Apple. Some say Apple is far too restrictive and that this will be its ultimate downfall.

What we do know is that the more players in the market, the better it is for the consumer as there is more choice and competitive pricing. Competition is good and each of the smartphone platforms will work harder, invest more in development and with more enterprise and hopefully bring us yet more exciting mobile phones to covet and own.

Personally, I think there is room for both Apple and Android. Customers will welcome these two big players competing in the marketplace with more money invested into technology and development which should lead to more consumer choice and value for money. This debate is certainly interesting to those in the Mobile Marketing industry who closely watch the smartphone trends as it relates to their target audiences and demographics.
